Cable Ties vs. Hook-and-Loop Straps: Choosing the Right Cable Management for Data Centre Racks

Data centre rack cabling benefits from fastening methods that can be readjusted.

Three months after a data hall is handed over, an engineer returns to the same rack. This time the job is to add two switches and remove six old patch cables. Every nylon cable tie installed during the original build must now be cut off one by one, and the bundle must be re-tied afterwards. If the cutter slips, a fibre patch cord next to it may be damaged. AI server racks already carry far more cables than traditional racks, often several hundred per rack, and they are re-cabled frequently. In that environment, a fastener that locks only once gradually becomes a maintenance cost. This article explains the difference between cable ties and hook-and-loop straps, the matching KSS part numbers, and the situations each one is designed for.

1. Two Different Fastening Principles

A nylon cable tie is a locking fastener. The toothed strap engages with a pawl and locks in one direction only. Tension depends on how hard the installer pulls, and removal requires cutting. It is a single-use consumable. A hook-and-loop strap works differently. The hook face and the loop face join together, and the strap passes through a buckle and folds back on itself. It can be opened at any time, retensioned, and reused.

The KSS catalogue covers both. 2. Why Network and Fibre Cables Should Not Be Bundled Too Tightly

High-speed network cables (UTP and STP) and fibre patch cords are far more sensitive to external pressure than standard power cables. A nylon cable tie applies pressure over a narrow contact area. If the bundle is pulled too tight, the cable jacket and internal structure can be deformed, which affects transmission quality. On site, tension is usually judged by hand, so it is difficult to standardise.

The KSS catalogue describes the MGL and MTL series clearly: designed for bundling network cables, signal cables and power cables, and reusable. Repeated opening and adjustable tension match the two constants of a data centre. First, cables must not be compressed too tightly. Second, the cabling keeps changing.

ANSI/TIA-942-C has also raised the minimum rack width to 800 mm for the main, intermediate and horizontal distribution areas, while VSFF connectors push fibre density towards 400G and 1.6T (16 fibre) applications. The number of cables in a single rack is now far higher than in a traditional rack. The more cables there are, the denser they become, and the more often they change, the more valuable a reusable fastener becomes. 3. MGL vs. MTL: Plastic Buckle or Metal Buckle

The selection rule is simple. Choose MGL when a single strap must hold a wider or thicker bundle, since the strap width reaches 90 mm. Choose MTL when the bundle is narrower but the buckle needs to be stronger, or when the required length is either longer (up to 702 mm) or shorter (from 153 mm).

4. When a Cable Tie Is Still the Correct Choice

Hook-and-loop straps do not replace cable ties. In the following situations, cable ties, ducts or clamps remain the correct solution:

In one sentence: use cable ties where a permanent lock is needed and where a flame or weather rating must be documented; use hook-and-loop straps where the bundle is opened frequently and the cables must not be compressed. In practice both are used inside the same rack. This is not an either-or decision.

5. Three Common Selection Mistakes

Mistake 1: assuming hook-and-loop straps can replace every cable tie. Reusability is an advantage, but it also means the strap is not a permanent lock. Fixing points that require a flame rating (94V-2 or 94V-0), a weather rating, or a documented tensile strength should still use CV series cable ties. The current KSS catalogue lists material, dimensions and application for the MGL and MTL series, but does not state a flame rating or a tensile strength value. If a project specification requires a flame rating or a mechanical strength value for hook-and-loop straps, please confirm with our sales team first.

Mistake 2: assuming a tighter bundle is a safer bundle. This may hold for power cables, but the opposite is true for high-speed network cables and fibre. These cables should be bundled with moderate tension and some slack, which is exactly what the adjustable tension of a hook-and-loop strap provides.

Mistake 3: assuming every part in a series shares the same specification. MGL and MTL are both hook-and-loop straps, yet the buckle material, width and length ranges differ significantly (MGL 15 to 90 mm wide, MTL 9 to 11.8 mm wide). Within the CV series the range is even wider, from 63.7 to 1,500 mm in length and 7 to 462 lbs in tensile strength. Always verify specifications part number by part number rather than by series name.
